Chapter 5: Wyld Incursion

A few days later I was awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of incessant hooting right by head.

Groggily, I stumbled out of bed, but then snapped my fingers activating an old Magi cantrip that brought instant awareness. It was the sort of thing that masters had been teaching apprentices since ancient times and which Jimmy might be learning soon.

While simple in its nature, the cantrip's importance of being able to awaken and focus a Magi's mind was sometimes crucial, and of course that was what the circumstances dictated in the moment. I glanced over at the owl statue that was near my bed, noticed that the color of its eyes were red, and made note that I'd better be ready for anything. The last times Socrates' eyes had been red was due to a major incursion of some nasty beastie breaching the barrier between our world and the Wyld.

Waving my hands in a quick gesture, Socrates became a life-like, but lifeless statue again, and I hastily made my way to my study. With a snap of my fingers a crystal bowl that always lay on my stout wooden desk began to glow bright blue and filled with water. Peering into the bowl images of the entire Seattle area rapidly scanned by as I sought the nature of the disturbance to our area.

A moment later as I was scanning the neighborhood of Freemont, a huge, ugly, face grimaced at me through the water in the bowl. Apparently, the big nasty was magically sensitive, and in this case big and nasty was no exaggeration.

Our missing Troll Lord had come to town.

There was not time to waste, for a variety of reasons. Who knew what damage a rogue troll, let alone a Troll Lord could do if left to its own devices. Not only that, there was also the matter of the Veil, the collective illusion and story woven by Magi and their allies that kept the magic world hidden from fragile mortal minds. A Troll Lord rampaging through the Fremont neighborhood of a major West Coast city like Seattle could crumple the Veil pretty quickly, even if Master Magi were involved to try and prevent such a thing.

I tapped the crystal bowl five times lightly. The water rippled sending out a vibration that let me know which magical allies and forces were nearby and available. Faces and images danced in and out. Hmmm…Master Shen and Karen are gone. Lionsmane is far away up north, but might be able to get here in time. O.G. looks like he's around, and of course Master Tau could be anywhere, but could also get here almost instantly if I could get a hold of him, I thought to myself. Pausing for a moment, I chanted a message into the air, and then empowered it with quite a bit of my own nwyfre energy. With a gesture, I scattered the message to the four winds imploring my allies to join me if they could to quell the threat.
